When Trauma Comes

to Church

Trauma is walking through all of our doors, but is often hard to see. It sits in the background of children, young people and adults, from all walks of life. Faith organisations should be welcoming and safe environments, but this is sadly not always the case.
In this workshop you will have the opportunity to explore what church could look like if it were to be more accessible to those whose lives have been impacted by adversity. We will discuss practical steps in creating safe spaces during church activities.

​Who is this workshop for?

​This workshop is for you if you are involved in any capacity with church discipleship, pastoral care or outreach.

This workshop will cover:​

  • Raising awareness of individual trauma responses

  • How to best support and create safe spaces for those who have experienced trauma, helping them find community, and supporting their wellbeing

  • Discuss the importance of preventing traumatisation in the first place

  • Increase your understanding of the way trauma can affect experiences of the Christian faith & church events

  • Explore ways to be more accessible & welcoming to those who have experienced adversity

  • Resource the church community in knowing when and where to turn for more expert help

 

This training is also available as a one day workshop, which would include the following topics:​

  • Facilitating practical safety (people, environment, activities)

  • Authentic accountable leadership (trustees, elders, church teams)

  • Team training

  • Red flags/things to avoid

  • Spiritual abuse

  • Whistleblowing

  • Policy reviews

  • Perspectives that promote safety â€‹

LENGTH: Half day
